Npc's are easy to predict and they certainly don't hotdrop you, so no real risk there, just gotta be prepared. I killed 2 guys running lvl5 missions this week in carriers. It's not exactly risk free and I'm sure they'd agree . That said if the devs decided to make lvl5's all gated that's certainly a legitimate change. The fact is doing them in a carrier is stupidly easy, the only hard part is avoiding the local gank squad. It's the risk of the local gank squad that justifies the rewards attached to lvl5's, not the missions themselves.
If you are in high sec, you risk basically nothing in a mission. The rats won't kill you unless you are stupid or get very unlucky with a lag spike. So no, you aren't risking a more expensive ship if you're doing them in high sec, you are risking nothing at all if you know what you are doing. Every time I undock my carrier, I risk having 20+ dreads dropped on me. And no, it doesn't take that much. I've seen a missioning carrier taken down with as little as 2x BS's and a pilgrim. Carriers are tough, but they aren't that tough.
Edit: You can't make even 1B isk a day running lvl5's in a capital. You can only run low sec ungated missions, that means you have to reject half of them. At an exchange rate of 1000 isk/LP which is very typical atm, to get 1B isk a day you'd have to run about 10 of them (70-80k LP + 20-30M isk). That's bull, the most I've ever been able to run in a single day was 3 because of mission rejection cool downs. So yeah, I theoretically made about 300M isk that day. But it's worth noting that I theoretically made 400M isk yesterday running FW lvl4 missions in a subcapital. Every one of those missions was gated. And on that note, I maybe done with lvl5's anyways, FW missions pay better, take less time and can be done with a much cheaper ship .
Of the reports on lvl 5's in eve survival, many of them are wrong, and a good portion of them simply are not there, so you can't predict anything - unlike with lvl 4's. I have seen this because i ran them in both subcaps and caps. I have run them in low-sec in carrier and dread - Operation Wyrmsbane can be done in 1 siege cycle by just killing the station as an example and you cyno out at the end of the siege cycle. With caps it's stupidly easy because you have just 1 ship on the field with a 3-4k dps tank. Worst case scenario, they go after fighters but you have RR to keep them alive, or you just recall them and their cruiser EHP lets them live untill they get safe.
I don't get insurance on my Marauder, and sometimes respawns happen out of the blue - they are not always the same trigger, i sometimes end up with scrams on both RR boat and marauder, and sometimes with both DPS and scrams, which is why i have lost 2 marauders so far and 3 RR boats.
Missioning carrier or not, a carrier is still a carrier, most missions do not have the dps to break it's tank, and by the time you do break it with 2 bs and 1 pilgrim, you will lose 1-2 of those ships for sure, reducing dps. Stupid ppl will always exist, and just because some guy in a Stabber killed a dread once - atlas guy, doesn't mean that all dreads will die to a solo Stabber.
There is an area where there are 4 lvl 5 agents for a faction. You can cycle between agents to pick only missions that are non-gated, and yes, you can do 4-5b isk /d with them. They are just blitzed, so forget about the 20-30m isk bounties in calculating it.
Which faction has these 4 level 5 agents in one system??
